Swar-Sadhana Tapovan is the actual Gurukul of Padma Vibhushan Dr. N. Rajam and Dr. Sangeeta Shankar — where free music education happens for village children every single week. You're not visiting a themed retreat. You're stepping inside something real.
This Gurukul exists because of the lineage, not as a side project of it — Dr. N. Rajam and Dr. Sangeeta Shankar built the majority of this campus with their own resources.
Real, free education happens here right now, for everyone. You're staying inside an active institution, not a stage set built for guests.
A consecrated temple, an open-air mandapam, mango and coconut orchards, and decades of Guru-Shishya tradition not an imported wellness aesthetic.
Every part of the campus was built with intention — not decorated to look spiritual, but actually used that way, every single day.

Each theme below runs as its own retreat, on its own calendar. See what's currently scheduled, or ask us about a custom one.
Raga, tala, and direct Guru-Shishya teaching in the open-air Mandapam — the founding practice of this Gurukul.
See scheduled dates ↓Landscape and devotional art inspired by the temple, the orchards, and the stillness of the campus.
See scheduled dates ↓Regional Indian culinary traditions taught hands-on — like Chatkara from Banaras, satvik and soulful.
See scheduled dates ↓Pranayama, traditional movement, and health camps — the same rhythm that opens every guest's day here.
See scheduled dates ↓Samskara-based learning for young minds, through music, fun, and games — as in Heritage Harmony.
See scheduled dates ↓Discipline, listening, and timing — the same principles that build great music, applied to building great teams.

Each one is its own complete experience — pick the one that matches what you're looking for.
A 3-day immersive culinary experience — discover and learn the art of authentic Banarasi chaat, satvik, soulful, and entirely hands-on. Limited to 30 guests.
Three days of musical bliss with Dr. N. Rajam herself, for students and music lovers, held over Gurupoornima. This batch is full — join the waitlist to hear about the next one.
A residential camp where children learn values (Samskara) through music, fun, and games, set in nature. Limited to 30 guests.
This isn't a retreat that pauses its purpose for guests. Alongside the retreats, Swar-Sadhana Tapovan runs ongoing community programmes for the villages around it — free, and entirely separate from anything guests pay for.
No — the Chatkara and Heritage Harmony retreats need no musical background at all. The Gurukul Retreat is aimed at students and music lovers, but no formal training is required to join.
Heritage Harmony is built specifically for children aged 5–15. The other retreats welcome solo travelers, couples, and families alike.
₹3,500 per day covers your accommodation in our well-appointed tents and all meals. In keeping with Gurukul tradition, the actual learning and workshops are free.
Comfortable clothing suited to the activity (painting clothes for Chatkara-style hands-on sessions, layers for early-morning yoga), and an open mind — we provide the rest.
Most guests fly into Bangalore and either take a direct taxi or the train to Marandahalli Station, where someone from the Gurukul will meet you with a placard for the short 3 km transfer. Full directions are in the Getting There section above.
